Pasta is still the perfect partner

The end of another successful year for Marshalls Pasta, the firm have no intentions of giving up their commitment to healthy eating and promoting youngsters’ involvement in sport.

Marshalls and the Daily Record Sporting Bursaries Campaign teamed up to host Highland games and cycling events across the country in 2005, with the overwhelming message that healthy food and healthy eating are vital to the development of any young athlete.

At the Marshalls Pasta Cycling For All open day in Edinburgh, Olympic cycling medalist Chris Hoy spent more than half an hour giving a talk to children and answering their questions. Peter Barry, Managing Director of Marshalls Pasta said of the event: We thought cycling was the perfect platform to communicate our healthy eating message, while appealing to a broad section of Scottish families.

“Race cyclists eat pasta aplenty to provide endurance and energy for their sport, so it’s appropriate that the leading brand of pasta in Scotland is supporting a number of Scottish cycling events”.
Lorraine Cullen, lead dietician for the Scottish Institute of Sport and David Campbell, chef to the British Lions rugby team, spoke of the value of pasta to young athletes and lent their own support to the work of the Daily Record and Marshalls.

And John Barclay, one of Scotland’s young rugby hopefuls, also lent his support to Marshalls healthy eating campaign. He said, “When I have a hard training session ahead, pasta gives me the energy I need to slog it out on the field. Pasta and I make the perfect team”.

Marshalls use only the finest quality of durum wheat in order to create their wide range of products, from twists and spirals to lasagne and short-cut macaroni. Their pasta comes with the option of healthy recipes and is an affordable short-cut to a healthy lifestyle.

For example, a cup of cooked spaghetti contains around 200 calories, 40 grams of carbohydrates, less than a gram of fat and no cholesterol. When accompanied by vegetable, fish, spices, meat or cheese, it can be the ideal dish at any time of the day.

Marshalls are currently working on their plans for next year, which will continue recent trends of promoting healthy eating values and a balanced diet.

Marshalls also plan to launch new products that reflect the high quality and traditional values of the Marshall’s brand.

At this time of year, the benefits of eating pasta are obvious and self- explanatory. During winter months pasta can help to increase energy levels and therefore give warmth when you need it most. Pasta is an excellent source of complex carbohydrates, which provide most of our body’s glucose intake. It is also a great source of B vitamins, iron and niacin.
